Italy asks Israel for clarification after interception of the Global Sumud flotilla

The Italian Foreign Ministry has requested official information after the Global Sumud flotilla was intercepted while sailing toward Gaza with aid.

Minister Antonio Tajani activated the crisis unit and tasked both the Italian Embassy in Tel Aviv and the Italian Embassy in Athens with coordinating contacts with the Israeli authorities and the Greek authorities.

On the flotilla, organized as the Global Sumud Flotilla were pro‑Palestinian activists, and the Italian government is asking for clarification on the operation's methods and the safety of its nationals.

The Israeli authorities carried out the maritime control operation, a practice that falls within actions states may take to intercept vessels considered at risk or in violation of naval blockades.

The ministry stressed its intention to take necessary measures to protect the Italian citizens on board and to obtain details about the flotilla's condition and the material destined for Gaza.
